Hou Hsiao Hsien

Hou Hsiaohsien is a Taiwanese film director, screenwriter, producer and actor. He is a leading figure in world cinema and in Taiwans New Wave cinema movement. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1989 for his film A City of Sadness , and the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 for The Assassin .

A Hakka, Hou HsiaoHsien was born in Mei County, Guangdong province in 1947. He and his family fled the Chinese Civil War to Taiwan the following year. Hou was educated at the National Taiwan Academy of the Arts.
